Golf Digest published its 2005 America's 100 Greatest rankings in its May edition. This biannual ranking was very special this year and long anticipated. 2005 was a year in which Golf Digest changed the formula ; they removed the category of Bonus Tradition which had long been criticized as giving too much emphasis to older august courses at the expense of newer designs. National Golf Links now ranks ninth. The Grand Seven
The categories are as follows:

Bob Rittenberger, of the Garden City Golf Club, shot a remarkably consistent 67, 69, 68 on the Bethpage Red course for his second win at the Long Island Golf Association's Long Island Open. Bob's previous win was in 2002. The Long Island Open attracted 150 players to this year's field. The field was cut to 40 players after the first day's round. This unique format called for the players to go around Bethpage Red for 36 holes on the second day. This year's purse was $40,000 and the winner's share was $7,000. In a scene that could have been right out of prime time on the PGA tour, Bob's wife Paige and his three children, ages 6, 4 and 2 ran out to the 18th green with some outstanding congratulatory hugs when Bob finished his wire to wire 7 shot win..
