BROOKVILLE, NY, May 8, – Mark Brown, Head Professional at The Tam O’Shanter Club, won his second Long Island PGA Championship defeating Craig Thomas on the second playoff hole.  Brown led the match after the front nine, one up and retained that lead through the 17th.  Craig Thomas needed to win the long par 5, 18th hole, to force a playoff.  Thomas hit his second shot into the left greenside bunker.  Brown hit a good iron shot from 215 yards, but was not rewarded as his the ball rolled over the green.  Brown took three shots to hole out, while Thomas made an incredible sand shot stopping just four feet from the hole.  He made the birdie putt to extend the match.   The first playoff hole was halved with pars.  On the second playoff hole, Thomas drove into the fairway bunker while Brown just missed the fairway on the right.  Brown’s approach left him with a 25 foot birdie effort.  Thomas’ approach went through the green.  Brown two-putted for par while Thomas’ chip came up short leading to a two putt bogey.

Mark is a previous winner of the Met Open in 1999, NY State Open in 1999 and 2002, the Met PGA CPC in 2002 and last year’s Met PGA Champion.

Deepdale Golf Club, one of the most prestigious and private country clubs on Long Island is in danger of being taken over by the Village of North Hills. Although less common than a failing public course being rescued by a private corporation, it is not unheard of for a private course to be taken over by local government via eminent domain. What makes the Deepdale situation particularly unique is the power and celebrity of the members, after all, this is a club that Bob Hope once belonged to.

North Hills mayor Marvin Natiss said that if the village is successful the property would not be developed and would remain a municipal course that would be used exclusively by village residents. Deepdale is owned by Real Property Owners Inc. who lease the course to members for $330,000 a year. The Deepdale Club was appraised for at a minimum of $35 to $40million in 2000. It is questionable whether the Village of North Hills can actually afford Deepdale and this proposed takeover promises to keep some high powered attorneys busy for quite some time.

A fully private equity club , situated in the heart of eastern Long Island's wine country, Olde Vine Golf Club offers a unique opportunity for the Long Island golfer seeking a private club membership. A links style course designed by William " Buddy" Johnson, Old Vine pays great respect to the native farmland and ecology and looks like it was meant to be. The sprawling  and elegant clubhouse also does not overwhelm the landscape  with its low profile that does not sacrifice an ounce of comfort. No detail has been omitted from this design and visitors will be treated to an actual vineyard at the entrance gate.

There are current incentives for those who join now and these include playing rites to the adjacent courses at the Links at Cherry Creek and the Woods at Cherry Creek. There are also options available to play at Tall Grass in Shoreham.

Colonial Springs has joined the ranks of Long Island private golf clubs. Founded in 1995, Colonial Springs began its life as a public course with limited opportunities for purchasing tee times in a member for a day model. In one of the most remarkable developments in recent Long Island golf course history , Colonial Springs is now a fully private club. They offer both a full membership package as well as a limited weekday membership.

As part of this transformation to private club, none other than Robert Trent Jones has been commissioned to re-design the layout. Colonial Springs is currently offering special incentives for those who join today. These incentives include an affordable membership that is 75% refundable throughout the life of a membership and fully refundable in 30 years.

The Tam O’Shanter Club has hired Michael Connors of Point Lookout as an assistant golf professional.  Michael joins a golf staff headed by Director of Golf and 2006 Long Island PGA champion, Mark Brown.

Michael recently graduated from Methodist College and worked as an assistant professional at Lido Golf Club.  Prior to turning professional in 2005, Michael successfully competed in local tournaments such as the IKE, Met Amateur, LI Open, LI Amateur and both Met and LI Publinks tournaments.

Founded in 1962, the Tam O’Shanter Club occupies 157 pristine acres on Long Island’s North Shore.  Renowned architect David Postlethwait, using the natural lay of the land, redesigned the par 72 golf course in 1999.  The club’s six har-tru tennis courts and outdoor swim facility complement the contemporary clubhouse constructed in 1973.  It houses dining and locker facilities, card rooms and a full golf pro shop.  Additional information may be found at www.tamoshanterclub.com
